February 28th is National Floral Design Day, celebrating the craft of floral design. Floriography has played a large part in the cultural fabric of many societies and is part of numerous celebrations, including birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, first dates, and graduations.

Today we'll take a deeper look at National Floral Design Day, its origins, and the best ways to celebrate Floral Design Day 2021.

What is Floral Design Day?

Floral Design Day is an official holiday that acknowledges the history and art of floral design. From historic gardens to floral arrangements and bouquets, the day reflects the flowers that excite us and add special meaning to our lives.

National Floral Design Day was commemorated in 1995 by the governor of Massachusetts as a way to celebrate the birthday of Carl Rittner, an explorer in floral art education and the founder of the Rittner School of Floral Design. Established in 1947, the school focuses on teaching aspiring florists the six principles of the art:

  • Balance
  • Contrast
  • Dominance
  • Proportion
  • Scale
  • Rhythm

Celebrations around the date have continued to grow.

Why is Floral Design Important?

Since the ancient Egyptians, flowers have been ornately displayed in paintings used in burial rituals. Flowers have inspired artists of every generation, from Vincent Van Gogh's "Irises" to Andy Warhol's "Flowers."

Floral design is a part of numerous special events, such as weddings and holidays, empowering people to express love, joy, and other emotions. We love how the right floral design can dramatically change the energy in a room and act as a form of unspoken communication.

Ways to Celebrate Floral Design Day 2021

There are many ways to celebrate the floral design holiday. At the core, Floral Design Day is about recognizing the talent of those who work in the industry. The holiday also showcases the beauty of approximately 400,000 flowering plant species existing around the world.

If you're a florist or love to design, we recommend making a one-of-a-kind arrangement to celebrate the holiday. Then display your beautiful work on Instagram, Twitter, and other social media platforms with the hashtag #floraldesignday or #floraldesignday20201.

You can also create a time-lapse video that shows you preparing the arrangement on TikTok or Instagram Reels, emphasizing the care and knowledge that goes into high-quality floral design.

Regardless of your floral design skills, we recommend celebrating floral design day by sending unique floral arrangements to the ones you love. Everyone loves to receive a fresh bouquet of beautiful flowers, and our customizable collection is the perfect way to celebrate this year.

You can also celebrate the holiday by wearing floral-inspired clothing and posting on social media with hashtags created specifically for the day. Join us this year in celebrating the beauty of flowers and the craft of floral design on National Floral Design Day, February 28th.
