Matchless for the unmatched - part three. Special Roses: the blue rose

The soft blue of the sky, the dazzling azure of the sea, the deep, mysterious navy of the ocean. We see it in garden flowers—forget-me-nots, cornflowers, bluebells—and in the bee-enticing purple-blue of bellflowers. It’s there in the vibrant blue plumage of birds calling to their mates. These are the colors of nature, harmony, and serenity. Yet, a single blue rose speaks to something else entirely—a sense of mystery, wonder, and the extraordinary, a symbol of defying the impossible.

Ever since the first rose plantations, we have been driven by the desire to create colors that don’t naturally exist. One of the most elusive among them is blue. While pansies and violets bloom in shades of blue, roses refuse to follow suit—unless carefully cultivated by expert breeders. After years of dedication and countless attempts, the seemingly impossible has become reality: roses in blue.

The long journey of rose breeding

The art of rose breeding is all about innovation—creating new varieties with a stronger fragrance, more vibrant colors, greater resilience, or extended blooming periods. While the deliberate cultivation of roses began in the 18th and 19th centuries, today, there are over 30,000 varieties worldwide. As breeders, we constantly seek to enhance roses with unique characteristics, from novel colors and richer petal structures to distinctive flower shapes. Fragrance is another key focus, whether intensifying its presence or prolonging its longevity. At the same time, disease resistance remains a priority, helping roses withstand threats like mildew and rust. Climate adaptability is equally important, with certain varieties bred to thrive in extreme heat or cold. And, of course, extending the flowering season is always a goal—some varieties now bloom multiple times a year, offering longer-lasting beauty.

In rose breeding, selective crossbreeding is the key to developing new varieties with unique traits. The process begins by carefully selecting two parent roses and cross-pollinating them. If successful, the rose forms a seed-containing rosette, which is then harvested and germinated to produce new seedlings. From these, only the most promising plants are chosen—those with exceptional blooms, captivating fragrance, or enhanced disease resistance—depending on the breeding goal. These selected seedlings undergo rigorous testing for years before they reach the market, meaning it can take anywhere from 6 to 10 years to introduce a new rose variety.

Blue rose – dream or reality?

For generations, the creation of a true blue rose remained an unattainable dream. Roses naturally lack delphinidin, the pigment responsible for blue hues, making traditional crossbreeding ineffective. However, after more than 13 years of research, a team of Japanese and Australian scientists achieved what once seemed impossible. Using genetic modification, they introduced the blue pigment gene from petunias into a rose, giving birth to the ‘Suntory Blue Rose Applause.’ Launched in 2009, it is considered the world’s first blue rose—though its hue leans more toward lavender-purple than a true blue.

The meaning of blue – Its impact on our senses

The color blue has long been associated with nobility and power—just consider the very name royal blue. At the same time, it embodies purity and tranquility, creating a sense of calm when we immerse ourselves in blue surroundings. It is also the color of reliability, symbolizing honesty and trust.

As precious as gold

In ancient Egypt, blue was crafted using various techniques and materials—glass, ceramic enamel, artist’s pigments—all derived from minerals like malachite and azurite. The semi-precious stone lapis lazuli was highly prized as an ornamental gem, but it wasn’t until the late Middle Ages that it was ground into pigment, creating ultramarine, one of the most coveted and expensive dyes. In fact, blue pigment often surpassed gold in value, reserved only for the most significant artworks and the wealthiest patrons.

The same exclusivity applied to textiles. For centuries, achieving a vivid, lasting blue in fabrics required organic dyes, which were difficult to obtain. Expensive indigo dyes were imported from North Africa and India before indigo-producing plants were cultivated in Europe. It wasn’t until the late 900s that blue clothing gained popularity in Western Europe, particularly in France, where it became the signature color of kings and princes—a mark of power, sophistication, and regal elegance.

The color of purity and peace

Close your eyes and picture the endless blue sky meeting the vast, tranquil sea. A sense of calm washes over you. The color blue has a naturally soothing, stress-relieving effect, making it the perfect choice for spaces where we seek rest and relaxation—like the bedroom. As the color of water, it also symbolizes purity and freshness, seamlessly complementing modern, minimalist interiors. Now, imagine stunning blue forever rose arrangements enhancing these spaces. Whether displayed as a striking centerpiece on a table or placed elegantly on a windowsill, these exquisite forever roses captivate with their unearthly beauty, drawing admiration from all who enter.

Trustworthy and honest

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, blue represents honesty and authenticity. That’s why it’s a dominant color in corporate branding, banking, and social media—it conveys trust and stability. Those who gravitate toward blue are often seen as sincere, loyal, and balanced.
